Reading the city: Istanbul transit in five charts

ZKZeynep KayaDIRECTOR · DATA INSIGHTSMAY 28, 2026· 7 MIN READ

A city of sixteen million doesn't move the way the map says it does. It moves the way its data does — in tides, bottlenecks and quiet streets that the timetable never mentions.

The map is not the territory

We pulled a season of open transit records and did the least glamorous thing possible: we looked. No model, no dashboard, just a handful of honest plots. Within an afternoon the city's rhythm was obvious — two commuter tides, a lunchtime lull, and a late-night ferry pattern nobody on the team had predicted.

A good chart ends an argument faster than a meeting.

Five charts, one story

The best chart of the five wasn't the prettiest. It was a plain line that showed the evening rush starting forty minutes earlier than the official schedule assumed. That single gap between the plan and the data is the kind of thing that changes how a route gets run.

You don't need a live dashboard to find it. You need clean data, a clear question, and the patience to actually read the answer.
